My Top Ten Movie Tunes: Disney

I love a good Disney movie, but there's one thing I like better: A good Disney song. Yes, despite my love of the... Genre? Can we call it that? Anywho, despite my love of it, I do appreciate its songs just a little bit more. I think it has something to do with the fact that Disney movies tend to make me cry, whether they're sad or not. For example, The Lion King (1994), a great movie that has that horrible scene in it where ***SPOILER*** Simba's father falls to his death. Now, this could easily make somebody shed a tear, but have you ever heard of someone crying simply because of the movie's beautiful scenery paired with the perfect song... Oh yes, I'm that bad. And that was only in the opening minutes of the film. So, as you now see, it is far easier on my tearducts to listen to Disney music as opposed to watching the movies. This brings me to my list: My top ten Disney movie tunes, in no particular order (Except for the first one!):

"Under the Sea" From The Little Mermaid (1989)

"You dream about going up there, but that is a big mistake."

"Kiss the Girl" From The Little Mermaid (1989)

"Yes, you want her. Look at her, you know you do."

"You'll Be in My Heart" From Tarzan (1999)

"Why can't they understand the way we feel? They just don't trust what they can't explain."

"Circle of Life" From The Lion King (1994)

"There's far too much to take in here; more to find that can ever be found."

"You've Got a Friend in Me" From Toy Story (1995)

"... But none of them will ever love you the way I do. It's me and you, boy."

"A Whole New World" From Aladdin (1992)

"Tell me, Princess, now when did you last let your heart decide?"

"I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" From Hercules (1997)

"You swoon, you sigh. Why deny it? Uh-oh!"

"Let's Go Fly a Kite" From Mary Poppins (1964)

"With your feet on the ground, you're a bird in flight with your fist holding tight to the string of your kite."

"Beauty and the Beast" From Beauty and the Beast (1991)

"Bittersweet and strange. Finding you can change. Learning you were wrong."

"When You Wish Upon a Star" From Pinocchio (1940)

"Fate is kind. She brings to those who love the sweet fulfillment of their secret longing."

Trivia: Of the ten songs listed above, eight were nominated for an Academy Award (All but "Let's Go Fly a Kite" and "I Won't Say (I'm In Love)"). Of the eight songs nominated, five took home the oscar ("Under the Sea", "You'll Be in My Heart", "Beauty and the Beast", "When You Wish Upon a Star", and "A Whole New World"). All three of the songs that lost in their category were beaten by other Disney songs. In the cases of "Kiss the Girls" and "Let's Go Fly a Kite", they were beated by songs from their own films, and "You've Got a Friend in Me" was passed over in favor of "Colors of the Wind" from Pocahontas (1995). I don't know what they were thinking with that one...

Movie Quote of the Day

"Old age... It's the only disease, Mr. Thompson, that you don't look forward to being cured of."

- Citizen Kane (1941)

My Five Favourite Films: Tom Hanks

Known as the Jimmy Stewart of his time, Tom Hanks is one of modern-Hollywood's most celebrated actors, and with his nice guy personality, and versatile acting chops, it isn't hard to see why. Though his career got off to a bumpy start in the 70's, by the late 80's, Hanks was one seriously indemand guy. That started with the surprise mega-hit Big, which went on to become the 4th highest grossing film of 1988, and earned Hanks his first of five Academy Award nominations (Of which, he would win two: back-to-back Oscars for the films Philadelphia (1993) and Forrest Gump (1994)). Although his popularity has fallen since the 90's, Hanks remains one of Cinema's most trusted thespians. No matter how bad the movie is, you can count on Hanks to turn in a stellar performance. Here are my five favourite Tom Hanks Films:

5.) Big (1988)

"I wish I were big."

4.) A League of Their Own (1992)

"Are you crying? Are you crying? ARE YOU CRYING? There's no crying! THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!"

3.) The Green Mile (1999)

"I just can't see God putting a gift like that in the hands of a man that would kill a child."

2.) Toy Story (1995)

"The word I'm searching for, I can't say, because there are preschool toys present."

1.) Forrest Gump (1994)

"My Momma always said life was like a box of chocolates... You never know what you're gonna get."

Movie Quote of the Day

"Christopher Robin out-grew Pooh. That's how it ended. He had Pooh when he was a child. When he Matured, he didn't need him anymore."

"Saddest thing I ever heard..."

- Beautiful Girls (1996)

It's one of the saddest things I've ever heard too.

Film Fun Fact

The VHS, or Video Home System, was developed in 1976, and released to the public in 1977. It marked the first time that fans could actually purchase and keep their movie favourites at home.

The last major shipment of VHS' was created in December, 2008. As of 2010, the majority of VHS' produced are blank, having been replaced by the DVD, which first went into production in 1995.

Review: The Goonies (1985)

In 1984, after the success of the movie Gremlins (1984), superproducer Steven Spielberg decided to produce yet another film revolving around kids and their adventures. Though this film, titled The Goonies, would not prove to be as successul at the box office as Gremlins had been a year earlier, it would go on to form a cult following, and eclipse the fame of its predecessor by far.

Hoping to save their homes from demolition, a group of kids, who call themselves the Goonies, set out on a hunt to find the long lost treasure of the pirate, One-eyed Willie, over-coming boobie traps and unusual obstacles along the way.

"Pinchers of Peril... saved by my Pinchers of Peril!"

The first time I saw The Goonies, I was 19 years old, and even as I inserted it into the DVD player, I worried that I was too old to really enjoy the movie (A lot coming from the girl to loves Christmas more than any other person on the planet and will never declare a lack of belief in Santa Claus. HE IS REAL). But, I am pleased to report that I loved The Goonies (As if there was ever any doubt...). This movie is fun. Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun. I don't see how anyone could dislike it.

The cast of kids is fantastic! Some very recognizable faces among them, too. My two favourites of the bunch were Corey Feldman, who played troublemaker Mouth, and Jeff Cohen, who portrayed Chunk.  These two were hilarious in their respective roles, though all of the kids provided good comedy. John Matuszak was also very good as Sloth, and his scenes with Cohen are heartwarming; they really bring a smile to your face.

"This is ridiculous. It's crazy. I feel like I'm babysitting, except I'm not getting paid."

To sum it up, The Goonies 'R' good enough... for me, at least. 10/10

Trivia: The Goonies features the character of Rosalita, a Spanish woman who can't speak or understand a word of English. This, of course, leads to a few jokes within the film that wouldn't have seemed humorous to Spanish-speaking audiences. To amend this, the Spanish version of the film instead features the character of Rossanna (Played by the same woman, with dubbing), an Italian woman who can't speak or understand a word of Spanish.
